    Condolence: Joyce Elizabeth McGuire, 1930-2017.

    My grandmother and grandfather both were asked to do something no parent should have to do; bury a child, not once, but twice. Having your children precede you in death is one of the worst fates imaginable- yet my grandmother never let herself slip into melancholia or nihilism. She remained cheerful, sunny, and incredibly witty throughout her life. It is my sincere hope that this is a page I can take from her book, especially in times like these when grief weighs heavy on my heart and mind. Though she remained healthful into her 8th decade, she fell ill quite recently with lung cancer and passed away this morning. I am deeply saddened by her passing, but I am grateful that her suffering is at an end, and that she is now reunited with my aunt and uncle. I wish them the companionship and joy in the next life they were cruelly robbed of in this.
