I was washing carboys when word came that Tom had died. Since my winemaking log was nearby I looked to see when I had begun buying juice and supples at Fallbright. It was 1983: 5 gallons of Delaware at $4 per gallon and 5 gallons of Diamond at $3.50.
So for 30 years I have been making the trek from Syracuse to Hyatt Hill Road in the fall. Carboys in the back of the car, it's a day I always look forward to. Like Spring training when every batter believes this is the year he will hit .300 and every pitcher that he will win 20 games, I know this is the year I will make great wine.
Understanding that I must come to the service for Tom, I flirted with the idea of putting carboys in the back of the car. A bit of the atmosphere of those happier trips therby would be recreated. In the end I decided not to. Was I really going to lug carboys into church? Instead, I filled a small cooler with ice and put in a bottle of 2013 Gewurztraminer, made from Tom's juice of course, for the reception afterwards. It's a good wine, a fitting tribute to Tom.
